One day visit to Trinity County

Explore this gold mining town’s historic buildings and you’ll find an up-and-coming art scene, handmade pottery and jewelry,  history of our Chinese community and a peek into the ‘Gold Rush’ days.   Close-to-town walking trails will take you through oak and evergreen forests, across historic mining ditches and near tailings piles from the days of mining dredges.

Two day visit to Trinity County

A couple of days in the outdoors is good for the soul.

We are not called Trinity for the triad of Trinity Lakes, Trinity Rivers and Trinity Alps, but we could be, for these are the reasons to be outdoors in Trinity County, CA.

If it is adventure and fun you are looking for, try a day of:

  • white water rafting  guided by experienced rafting companies who will customize your trip to fit your level of excitement.
  • curvy bike trails with enough thrills to satisfy any fat tire rider
  • a real-life, shoot’em up video game of laser tag in the outdoors on the Trinity River
  • water-skiing or tubing behind a high-powered ski boat on Trinity or Ruth Lake
  • rock-climbing.  Trinity County has some of the finest limestone climbing crags in the state.

The second day you might try something quieter, but just as much fun:

  • fishing on the rivers or lakes, whether it be bait fishing or fly-fishing; at a lake or river you can drive to or must hike to.   Trinity County offers diverse year-round fishing opportunities. It is a place where all kinds of fishermen can pursue up to eleven different species of game fish: Black Bass, Small Mouth Bass, Catfish, Kokanee Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Brown and Eastern Brook trout.
  • day hikes on the Weaver Basin Trail System – Over 40 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, with multiple entry points around the town of Weaverville.
  • canoeing or kayaking on Lewiston Lake.  Bring your own boat or rent from Pine Cove Marina.  Keep a lookout for eagles fishing in the lake, and otters and beavers have been spotted on a quiet morning paddle.  Pull your canoe up close to the berry bushes on the shore for the best tasting blackberries ever.  Remember, the speed limit is 10mph!!
  • a pontoon patio boat picnic on Trinity, Ruth or Lewiston Lake.  Rentals are available from the marinas on the individual lakes.  Find a quiet cove (there are many) and settle in for a day of playing in the water, reading, conversation, fishing, napping and, of course, eating.  BBQs are provided.
  • golf or disc golf The  9 Hole Trinity Alps Golf Course, putting green and driving range in Weaverville is ready to challenge golfers of any style with small old fashioned type greens and numerous trees lining the fairways.  An excellent restaurant and beer/wine bar awaits the finish of your day ‘on the green‘.  There are 3 disc golf courses in the county, so you have the choice of settings, meadows, parks or hilly, all are challenging and fun.

Three days gives you a little more time to relax and enjoy a sampling of pastimes.

  • Camping at Trinity, Lewiston or Ruth Lakes– Tent and RV campgrounds abound in Trinity County — whether they are established camps near the lakes and rivers, private campgrounds or RV parks with amenities, or a flat open area in the wilderness overlooking an alpine lake.  Some of the developed campgrounds have campground hosts who will help make your stay pleasant and answer any questions you may have. In the Trinity Center (North Trinity) area, there’s a KOA Campground.  The only free campground is Rush Creek Campground, which is on Hwy 3 north out of Weaverville (as you head toward Trinity Lake).

Beautiful Trinity Lake, is one of Northern California’s favorite houseboating playgrounds. Here you find miles of tree-lined shores and countless secluded coves perfect for claiming your own overnight base camp. Patio boating is another way to spend a blissful afternoon. Picnic or BBQ while floating on the serene waters. Families find these outings to be great times to enjoy nature and each others’ company.

 

Backpacking in the Trinity Alps Wilderness

In the warm summertime, a cool pine forest laced with bracing-cold streams sounds just right. Take a dip in ice-cold swimming holes, hike through fields of wildflowers, then jump back into the crisp alpine waters to cool off again or throw in a fishing line to hook a main dish for dinner.  Spring and Autumn are great times to be in the Alps also.  Spring may still have a coating of snow in some areas, so check with the Weaverville Ranger Station to see what trails are open.

Camping

Drive-up camping sites on Trinity, Ruth or Lewiston Lakes provide views of the lake and mountains. You provide the scary stories around the campfire.  Tent camping, RV camping, group camping are available.  No boat?…rentals are available at the Marinas.  The history-rich towns of Lewiston and Weaverville, or Ruth and Mad River are nearby.
