Coming in from the East on Highway 299
Here are our favorite places to score burgers as you drive into the county east to west along Highway 299.
Aqua Café & Grill (Lewiston)
Nestled in the heart of Lewiston on Trinity Dam Boulevard off of Highway 299, Aqua Café & Grill serves up juicy, wholesome burgers alongside kids’ favorites like mac‑n‑cheese and shakes. This casual cafe is part healthy eatery, part comfort food haven. Their burgers are stacked and savory, but you can also order you’ll also find lighter fare like wraps and salads, too—perfect if you’re pacing yourself for other culinary stops along the road. a lighter option if you’re pacing yourself for other culinary delights on your road trip. The outdoor dining area lets little ones roam while adults savor the alpine‑fresh air.
Trinity County Brewing Company (Weaverville)
Further west along 299 is Weaverville, the county seat. First stop: Trinity County Brewing Company. It’s famous for its house-made beers, but their burgers deserve serious love too. Think thick, juicy patties and fresh toppings, all in a chill atmosphere with plenty of outdoor seating. Families love the open space and relaxed service—and there’s root beer on tap for the kids.
Before you resume your burger quest, make sure to explore Weaverville’s many attractions, such as the Weaverville historic district and its stores, galleries, and more.
North to South along Highway 3
Highway 3 connects the northern and southern parts of Trinity County and there are several delectable discoveries to make along its length. Here are some of our favorites from North to South.
Yellow Jacket Eatery (Trinity Center)
Yellow Jacket Eatery in Trinity Center is the “don’t miss” spot for sliders, creative burger toppings, and maybe a milkshake on the side. It’s laid-back, charming, and great for big groups. Kick off with sliders or their signature Yellow Jacket Burger—farm‑to‑table beef, and crisp fries. Not a burger fan? They also offer fresh sandwiches, hearty breakfast options, and rotating seasonal specials. Grab one of the outdoor picnic tables under the trees and enjoy. Kids and pups are welcome! Check their website for live music events.
Bear’s Breath Bar & Grill (at Trinity Alps Resort)
Just a short hop from Yellow Jacket is Bear’s Breath at Trinity Alps Resort. Bear’s Breath dishes out hearty burgers (locals love their Bigfoot Burger), homemade potato skins, and breezy seating near the Trinity River. It’s got that “classic summer camp” feel—a vintage arcade, grassy lawns, fire pits, and lots of room for kids to play while you unwind. Their menu also includes BBQ plates, salads, and snacks to share.
Frontier Fuel Deli & Grill (Hayfork)
South of Weaverville, as you take Highway 3 to Hayfork, Frontier Fuel Deli & Grill is the perfect deli stop. This hidden gem is part fuel stop, part grill, and 100% worth it. Despite its gas station quick stop appearance, the food is amazingly good – burgers made with locally sourced, grass-fed beef, freshly grilled to order, and the sides (potato wedges, anyone?) are perfect road trip snacks. Not craving a burger? Try a breakfast burrito, grilled panini, or fresh deli sub. Pull over, stretch your legs, and enjoy a quick bite before heading deeper into the hills.
From Hayfork, keep heading south or loop around on forested roads, making the roadside views just as memorable as the food.
Best burgers near Highway 36
As you go further south on Highway 3, get on Highway 36 and go west towards the Mad River area for two of our favorite burgers in southern Trinity County.
Mad River Burger Bar (Mad River)
No-frills, but all heart. The Mad River Burger Bar is a local favorite for a reason—generous portions, and classic roadstop food. But perhaps its biggest appeal is the frontier vibe and rustic feel. Locals often go out of their way to get there. The shaded outdoor seating lets you comfortably stretch your legs after a long drive and there’s enough menu variety—from chicken sandwiches to loaded nachos— to keep everyone happy.
Journey’s End (Ruth Lake)
Journey’s End at Ruth Lake rounds out the Great Burger Adventure with a scenic lakeside finish. Burgers, shakes, and lakeside views make this a perfect finale—or even a standalone half‑day trip with water‑play options for kids. They make everything from scratch and it’s truly fresh and good quality. And if you’re not in the mood for a burger, try the fresh-caught fish tacos or seasonal specials. Eat outside, mix it up with the locals, maybe go for a dip, and soak in the end-of-day golden light while the kids splash around. It’s the perfect end to a full day of driving and dining.
Don’t rush it and savor every bite
This isn’t a race—it’s a burger trail. So slow down, take the scenic detours, and make memories one burger at a time. Whether you’re camping, hiking, or just out for a drive, Trinity’s backroads are the perfect backdrop for summer flavor—burgers and beyond.
Map it out, or just follow your cravings. Either way, you’re in for one tasty ride!
