Hey there! Bradley Everest here, born and raised right here in beautiful Trinity County, northern California’s hidden gem. I’ve been hearing some frustrations from family and friends down in the Bay Area for years. They’re tired of the bumper-to-bumper traffic, the pricey hotels, and the required “year-in-advance” bookings just to get a taste of nature in Yosemite or Lake Tahoe.
Well, as a lifelong local, let me get you in on a little secret: Fall is Trinity County’s best season, and we are your perfect escape.
Just a scenic four-hour drive from San Francisco, you can trade in the fog and congestion to make some of your best fall memories in Trinity County. Warm, golden afternoons and brisk, starry nights, all set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Trinity Alps. Forget fighting the crowds. Trust a local on this: experiencing fall in Trinity County this year is the best escape you could have. Stunning scenery, amazing fall colors, endless outdoor adventures without the stress, and the perfect reason to break out that cozy sweater in your closet.
Here’s my guide to escaping to Trinity this autumn.
Fall is Our Golden Season: The Perfect Time to Visit
What makes autumn in Trinity County a more attractive alternative to those more overcrowded spots? It’s simple: we get the absolute best weather when the rest of California is either too hot, too cold, or too busy.
While other parts of the state are slowing down, late September through early November is when our outdoor life truly thrives. The hot summer heat is gone, leaving behind the perfect conditions for getting out there. You’ll find:
- Warm, Sunny Days: Ideal for long hikes, mountain biking, or relaxing on a cabin porch.
- Crisp, Clear Nights: Perfect for lighting a wood stove and experiencing legendary, zero-light-pollution stargazing.
- Unrivaled Foliage: The gold and crimson displays compare to what the Sierra has to offer—but you’ll actually find parking and quiet solitude.
This is the perfect time to take a break, relax, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Trinity Alps without waiting in traffic.
Your Adventure Checklist: Activities for Every Lifestyle
Whether you’re a family with kids, a couple seeking a romantic getaway, or a solo explorer, Trinity County has a wide range of autumn activities that fit your style and budget.

Keep an eye out for any local craft beer festivals, live music, or art walks happening throughout the fall. They’re a fantastic way to enjoy a crisp evening and meet the friendly locals over a locally brewed pint at the Trinity County Brewery.
Escape to Serenity near Trinity Lake
If you’re searching for an unforgettable getaway near Trinity Center and Trinity Lake, Bonanza King Resort is a fantastic option. Nestled alongside Coffee Creek at the base of the Trinity Alps, this 10-acre retreat offers a perfect blend of seclusion and natural beauty. The newly renovated, cozy cabins offer some of the best glamping experiences, featuring modern amenities, and some even come equipped with wood-burning stoves. Imagine snuggling under a blanket on your private deck, listening to the gentle flow of the creek before gathering around the resort’s bonfire area to roast marshmallows under a starlit sky.
But that’s not the only Basecamp! Suppose you’re traveling with an RV or prefer full amenities. In that case, the Trinity Lake KOA Holiday offers marvelous Deluxe Cabins and is open for fall camping, providing easy access to the lake and the Alps trails. For the real tent campers looking for that quiet solitude, check out Minersville Campground or Hayward Flat—they’re less crowded in the fall, offering first-come, first-served sites near the water.
No matter where you drop anchor, you’re perfectly positioned to explore. You can hike the endless trails of the Trinity Alps Wilderness to catch the last of the golden colors, or go off-roading on the scenic trails.
